Sanctus ("holy") is a hymn of praise in the Christian liturgy. Its text originates from the biblical passages of Isaiah 6:3 and Revelelation 4:8. In traditional liturgy, the Sanctus is a Eucharistic prayer, forming a set part of the Mass.
Sanctus (SATB + Violin & Piano) begins simply with a violin solo, which then passes on to an optional soprano soloist. As the choir enters, phrases build and swell with each utterance. A contrasting acapella "Benedictus" section conveys a sense of increased motion to match the text. This builds to a final return of the Sanctus text, soaring with adoration, a sense of abandonment, and joy. Sanctus may be performed alone as a choral anthem for concert use or service of worship, or it may be programmed alongside Kyrie for added effect.
Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus
Dominus Deus sabbaoth
Hosanna in excelsis
Pleni sunt coeli et terra
Gloria tua
Hosanna in excelsis.
Holy, holy, holy
Lord God of hosts
Hosanna in the highest
Heaven and earth are
Full of thy glory
Hosanna in the highest.
